A New International Publication from Balıkesir University
An academic study on lichens, co-authored by Lect. Dr. Handan KURTULMUŞ SANCAK, a faculty member at Balıkesir University (BAÜN) Edremit Vocational School, has contributed significantly to science by revealing important findings.
The study titled “Assessment of Solvent-Dependent Change in Multifunctional Biological Activities of Macroepiphytic Lichens Evernia prunastri, Pseudevernia furfuracea, and Usnea florida”, co-authored by BAÜN academic Lect. Dr. Handan KURTULMUŞ SANCAK, was published in the South African Journal of Botany, a journal indexed in the top-tier Q2 category (Impact Factor: 2.7) in international journal rankings.
Lect. Dr. Handan KURTULMUŞ SANCAK stated: "Our study stands out as one of the rare works in terms of the comprehensive biological activity and the number of organisms involved in antibiofilm research."
There is a growing global trend toward biological resources, with lichens being among the most heavily researched natural raw material sources. This study comprehensively determines the significance of lichens, which are highly valuable for their biological activities. In particular, anti-enzyme and antibiofilm activities were thoroughly evaluated in lichens. Furthermore, the study offers a unique contribution to the field regarding the diversity and number of organisms included in the antibiofilm and antimicrobial assays.
Lect. Dr. Handan KURTULMUŞ SANCAK expressed that the findings obtained could shed light on the development of future strategies for utilizing lichens as natural pharmaceutical raw materials through more detailed research.
